GET READY FOR EXAMS !!!
It's that time of the year again when you give your all to the
examination booklet - the stack of papers
that seems to be the determining factor of your life.
Well at least, that's how some of us feel,
although it is always the case !
Whatever you are feeling there is no avoiding that period of
your life at the end of the year .
Don't get nervous , get cracking !
Don't breakout , break into the mood !
Don't lose hope , plan ,set goals and go !
Highlight and Bookmark .
You would have been way past studying right now and ought
to have made notes on paper or notebook .
The greatest mistake students make is to read chapters without writing down
the important points of what they have read .
Think of it how could your memory hold so much information ?
It would be easier to put thinks in small chunks or important point forms to aid recall .
Get that piece of paper and write down the formula
and its usage and paste it on the wall .
Use magic colour to write the bullet points of the geographical factors of a country .
Use highlighters so that important words stand out .
Bookmark important pages - it saves time flipping through the book .
Draw Out Important Points and Connections .
Use mind - mapping to give you a bird's eye view
on a particular chapter or topic . Imagine a wheel with spokes .
Say the topic you have chosen is pointers to an essay entitled
" How our Country was colonized" .
Now put that title in the middle of the wheel and use the spoke
as branches to your main points .
Your three main points could be the Portugese colonisation , and the British colonisation .
Each of these points represent a different spoke .
For each of these spokes add question branches to it - when did happened ,
how did happened , who were the significant people involved ,
what changes were made to the political , economy ,
social and education system , what treaties were signed , how did it effect the people .
For each of these branches put in the points and there -
you have the colonisation history of Malaysia in one page !
You can use this method when you want to write essays or to remember a scientific
concept or to have and overview of a theory .
Use Flashcards .
Make rectangular cards from recycled greeting cards ,
the back is usually empty or you can get some stationery shops .
Write down important formulas and facts
on these cards so you can flip through it in between classes or while waiting for the bus .
Record Your Points .
If you can afford to go hi - tech , record your bullet points on audio
using a recorder or cell phones .
Listen to it whenever you can . Now , now this is not the reason for you to force
your parents to purchase a gadget for the sake of the exams .
If you have one use it , if not , you won't lose out .
Practice Past Years' Papers .
Yes , practice , practice , practice !
This is the only way for to get the hang of your exams .
You would recognise questioning styles and answering
methods through past year papers .
Time Yourself .
Time yourself especially for essay writing and maths papers .
For essays , take ten minutes to plan
and state your main points , elaboration and arguments .
With the next half hour , the plan helps you to write smoothly and the last few
minutes to read through , edit and add .
Do lots of these and those maths problems and it would boost
your confident during exams .
Ask .
Still stuck on certain things ? Ask your teacher ,
friends , classmates or parents .
This is the time to clarify and not to be shy .
Rest and Play .
Yes , do make time to still listen to music , exercises ,
play games and stretch , but limit yourself .
And remember , don't start with those computer games as before you know it,
you would have thrown away precious time .
Get 7-8 hours of sleep and don't skip your meals .
